Robinson’s life began in Chicago, where she was born the fourth child in a family of seven siblings. Her parents were Purnell Nathaniel Shields, a house painter and carpenter, and Rebecca Jumper, a licensed nurse. The couple later separated.
Both of her parents had diverse racial heritage. Her maternal great-grandfather, Dolphus T. Shields, lived from approximately 1860 to 1950. He was born to an enslaved mother and a white father who was the heir of the slaveowner.
In January 2009, The New York Times reported that Robinson would be moving into the White House with her daughter, Michelle, and son-in-law and then U.S. president, Barack Obama. The move was seen as logical due to Robinson’s significant role in the lives of her granddaughters, Sasha and Malia.
However, Robinson expressed uncertainty about the move, having lived in Chicago her entire life. She indicated to the outlet that this transition would be a major change for her, stating that although she might “fuss a little,” she would ultimately be there.
A White House spokesperson later clarified that Robinson’s stay at the presidential residence was intended to be temporary. Following the 2008 election, Robinson remarked that while she loved her family, she preferred her own home. She likened the White House to a museum.
