Jennifer Syme was an American actress whose time in the spotlight was short but very impactful. Although she was involved in various popular productions, she was mostly known for being the girlfriend of The Matrix and John Wick star, Keanu Reeves. However, she died in a car accident shortly after she and Reeves had reunited.

Jennifer Maria Syme was born on December 7, 1972, in Pico Rivera, situated in the U.S. state of California, and was raised in Laguna Beach. Before starting high school, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother where she developed a passion for moviemaking, especially for David Lynch’s films.

At the age of 16, Syme landed a job at Lynch’s company, Asymmetrical Productions, as an intern and worked there for five years. During that period, she introduced Lynch to many of the musicians he used in his projects. According to actor and filmmaker Scott Coffey, Syme was a huge influence on the music in the 1997 film, Lost Highway.
Syme was also an actress, featuring in five of Coffey’s independent short films. She made her film debut in David Lynch’s Lost Highway in 1997, in a role credited as “junkie girl”. Syme also featured in Coffey’s Ellie Parker, which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2001. She reprised her role as “casting chick” in Coffey’s film of the same title which was released in 2005.
Apart from acting, Syme was a personal assistant to guitarist Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction and, later, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Before her death, she worked as a record company executive, having enrolled in a film-supervision course at UCLA.

Syme was the daughter of Maria St. John and Charles Syme, a retired California highway patrol officer, who were divorced after she was born.
She met actor Keanu Reeves in 1998 at a party thrown for Reeves’s rock band, Dogstar, and they began dating. In 1999, Syme got pregnant with their first child. However, the baby, who would have been named Ava Archer Syme Reeves, was born stillborn on December 24, 1999.
The baby’s death devastated Syme and Reeves and reportedly led to their break up. However, they remained close friends and later got back together in 2001, shortly before Syme’s death.

Syme reportedly fell into depression after her grandfather, Alfonso Diaz, died in March 2001 and ended up in a hospital for the first time since her baby died. On the night of April 1, 2001, she drove her Jeep Grand Cherokee into a row of parked cars on Cahuenga Boulevard in Los Angeles on her way home from a party at musician Marilyn Manson’s house. She died instantly.
Syme was buried next to her daughter, Ava Archer Reeves, in Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.
An investigation into the accident showed that Syme was not wearing her seatbelt and was intoxicated at the time of the collision. Police also found a white, powdery substance and two bottles of prescription drugs: a muscle relaxant and an anticonvulsant in her car. However, her mother claimed that Syme had recently sought treatment for back pain from an earlier car accident and for her depression caused by her baby’s death.
Syme’s mother also sued Marilyn Manson for giving her daughter drugs and instructing her to drive under the intoxication, which Manson denied. The case was dismissed in May 2003.
