Maya Jama: ‘Love Island’ host whose relationship with Stormzy crashed

Maya Jama is a British television personality who has become a household name. Known for hosting the popular TV show, Love Island, Jama has also worked as a DJ, radio host and presenter on primetime TV. She was even one of the judges in the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.

Despite her achievements, Jama has frequently made the news because of her tumultuous love life, especially with British rapper, Stormzy.

Maya Indea Jama was born on August 14, 1994, in Bristol, United Kingdom. She was named after the celebrated US poet, Maya Angelou because her mother read the famous poem, Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, during her pregnancy.

At the age of 16, Jama moved to London to pursue her broadcasting career. She set up her own YouTube channel and also landed a gig as a presenter for JumpOff TV. Jama later worked for Sky UK and TRACE Sports.

Since then, she has hosted popular TV shows like MTV’s The Wrap-Up, MTV Essentials and MTV News. Other shows Jama has hosted include Maya’s FIFA World Cup Cities, 2017 Pre-Brit Awards Party, Cannonball, the MOBO Awards, The Circle,  Stand Up to Cancer, Peter Crouch: Save Our Summer, Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star and Simon Cowell’s Walk the Line.

In 2023, Jama became the host of Love Island, replacing Laura Whitmore. She was also announced to be the host of the spinoff show Love Island Games in August 2023. In March 2024, Jama hosted the BRIT Awards alongside Roman Kemp and Clara Amfo.

Other works

Apart from hosting TV shows, Jama has been involved in radio, modelling, podcasting and entrepreneurship. Between 2014 and 2017, she hosted #DriveWithMaya, a weekday show on Rinse FM. She also anchors Radio 1’s Greatest Hits on BBC Radio 1.

In 2018, Jama hosted a podcast called, When Life Gives You Melons, in partnership with Freya. In the same year, she became an ambassador for Savera UK and also launched a successful clothing collection with PrettyLittleThing. Jama is also a brand ambassador for Adidas and the Australian hair care brand Aussie.

In 2020, Jama launched her face and eye mask range, MIJ Masks, selling out the first release within 24 hours.

In terms of awards, Jama won the 2019 People’s Choice Award for best dressed star.

Jama reportedly has an estimated net worth of £3million. She previously claimed she became a millionaire by the age of 24 and lives in a plush home in London.

Jama is of Somali descent on her father’s side and has Swedish and Scottish descent from her mother’s side. She also has a brother.

Jama’s father was in prison for most of her childhood for violence-related crimes, such as pub brawls and fights. At the age of 12, she stopped visiting her father in prison, leading to a strained relationship. However, she received a lot of love and support from her father’s family.

On the other hand, Jama has a close relationship with her mother and occasionally features her in some of her shows.

Jama began dating British rapper, Stormzy, in 2014. However, the couple made their relationship public in 2016 and broke up in 2019.

During their break up, Jama began dating basketball star, Ben Simmons, in 2020. In 2022, the couple were engaged to be married but they ended their relationship in September of the same year.

In August 2023, Jama and Stormzy reunited again but failed to make their relationship work as they broke up again in July 2024.

In a lengthy Instagram post explaining why they are separating again, Jama and Stromzy co-wrote: “We fell madly in love in 2014, broke up in 2019, and then spent five years manoeuvring life apart.

“We decided to try for the final time in August 2023, and we’ve spent this past year trying our best to make it work; however, we recently decided to call it quits. ”
